The North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation is easing COVID-19 quarantine restrictions, following adjustments to state and federal guidelines. Starting Monday, staff members who’ve come into close contact with someone who’s tested positive but aren’t showing symptoms will have the option to return to work.

However, they’ll have to stay at least six feet away from students or other staff members and wear a mask the entire time they’re at work, in addition to a number of other precautions. The change is due to the Indiana Department of Health’s classification of school staff as “critical infrastructure workers.”

For students, as well as staff members who do decide to quarantine, N.J.-S.P. will follow the CDC’s updated guidance that allows close contacts to leave quarantine after 10 days, if they don’t develop symptoms.

In a letter Thursday, Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin stressed that the school corporation will not compromise the health of its students. Employees who test positive or have symptoms will not be allowed to enter the building or teach in-person classes. Still, Zupin said the new guidelines provide “the best possible opportunity to continue the year safely with in-person classes.”

Knox School Superintendent Dr. William Reichhart announced similar adjustments Tuesday.
