People who have a coronavirus tests are asked to self-isolate until they receive their results.
And, due to high demand, the time in isolation and the wait for results could be up to a week or more.
Dr. Karen Landers with the Alabama Department of Public Health said its Bureau of Clinic Laboratories has a current turnaround time of 48-72 hours for specimens sent to its lab. That turnaround time can increase based on shortages of supplies, she added.
The wait for results through commercial or clinical labs can be even longer. In Huntsville, Thrive Alabama has teamed with the city and Huntsville Hospital to do drive-thru testing and the sites have seen high demand.
The site, which is offering testing to asymptomatic people who report recent COVID exposure, is reporting turnaround times of one week. Thrive said it has tested around 400 people a day as Madison County has seen skyrocketing case numbers.
Anyone who is tested for COVID-19 is asked to self-isolate at home until they receive their results. If they are positive, they must quarantine at home for 14 days or until cleared by the ADPH.
