FREMONT - Fremont City Schools has revised its dress code for the 2020-2021 school year and will allow students to have book bags in an effort to limit locker use.
The FCS school board approved the dress code revisions and use of book bags Thursday.
Superintendent Jon Detwiler said many school districts had placed bans on book bags after incidents like the 1999 Columbine school shooting, with administrators and teachers concerned they would not know what was in students' bags.
With the COVID-19 pandemic and schools trying to limit students congregating around locker spaces, Detwiler said he thought this would be a good time to allow book bags back into the Fremont district's classrooms.
Book bags were not allowed in FCS classrooms during the 2019-2020 school year unless approved by a principal due to special circumstances.
If a child can go class to class all day without needing to go to a locker to get things, it will be better for limiting students congregating near lockers, Detwiler said.
He said book bags can create potential trip hazards, but Detwiler cited the "extraordinary times" in asking the board to allow them in classrooms.
"This year, I think the book bags will be our friends," Detwiler said.

Detwiler also highlighted to the school board some of the more significant updates to the district's dress code.
Articles of clothing that reveal the back, chest, upper thigh or undergarments will be unacceptable.
Shirts must fully cover a student's stomach.
Ripped jeans that expose skin, a student's upper thigh or reveal undergarments will be unacceptable.
Detwiler said students wearing leggings or yoga pants will need to wear a shirt that reaches their mid-thigh.

The superintendent said he talked to district principals about the dress code revisions, which were similar to what the principals had instituted for "dress down" days.
