Some businesses in Roseburg now have the opportunity to utilize public, on-street parking spaces to accommodate outdoor seating, queuing and shopping areas.
Communications Specialist Eric Johnson said that can include restaurants and retail businesses.
Community Development Director Stuart Cowie said the program is similar to what other cities in Oregon have been doing to help provide support to businesses suffering from the economic impacts of COVID-19. Cowie said businesses who apply could utilize designated spaces in the public right-of-way to more effectively provide social distancing measures for their customers. Restaurants for example who are limited by the number of customers they can seat inside, could apply to place tables and chairs as a seating option in a parking space located in front of their business, so additional customers could be served.
Johnson said there is no fee to apply and the review process is streamlined so that businesses can start utilizing their space as soon as possible. In addition to submitting an application, each business must provide a site plan, which details the parking spaces to be used and the location and type of barricades, furniture and fixtures that will be placed in the right-of-way area. Businesses who serve alcohol must provide a copy of their current OLCC license.
Once approved, the permits are valid until October 30th. Johnson told News Radio 1240 KQEN that calls are already coming in from interested businesses.
