The Capitals are getting set for the playoffs and the Wizards are the hottest team in the NBA. Pretty soon, more people will be able to watch both teams play in person.
On Monday, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser's office approved a waiver for Monumental Sports to allow 25 percent capacity at Capital One Arena, NBC Sports Washington was told. The new rules will go into effect on May 14.
That will be up from the 10 percent limit they have been operating with since April 21. That was just a start after 13 months of no fans being allowed at games due to the coronavirus.
Bowser also announced on Monday that all capacity restrictions would be lifted in D.C. on June 11. That could affect the Capitals or Wizards this season if they go on deep playoff runs.
As for which games the Wizards and Caps will begin allowing 25 percent, those details are still being ironed out. The teams are awaiting more details from the mayor's office on what restrictions are required to expand capacity.
The Wizards' next home game is May 14. They also play on May 16 in Washington before likely beginning their postseason run, which as of now would start with a home game in the play-in tournament.
The Capitals play at home on Tuesday to close out the regular season. They will then play a first-round playoff series with home ice advantage.
If the Wizards can expand capacity before their final home games, it could be very fortuitous timing. Russell Westbrook is only one triple-double away from breaking the NBA's all-time record. He also leads the league in assists, while Bradley Beal is second in scoring. The Wizards are also close to clinching their first postseason berth since 2018.
Tune into NBC Sports Washington at 6:30 Monday night for full coverage of Russell Westbrook's chase of the all-time triple-double record.
