He didn't make it easy, but Phil Mickelson made history on Sunday.
At 50 years, 11 months and 8 days old, Lefty won the 2021 PGA Championship — the sixth major tournament victory of his career. With the win, he became the oldest major winner in golf history.
It looked as if Round 4 would be tight throughout at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina; Mickelson bogeyed the opening hole while his playing partner, Brooks Koepka, birdied to retake the lead. In all, Mickelson bogeyed six holes in the final round but also used five timely birdies to finish 1 over for the round and 6 under for the tournament.
Mickelson got plenty of competition from Koepka and Louis Oosthuizen, who tied for second at 4 under. Indeed, it arguably wasn't over until Mickelson's approach shot on 18 made the win nearly certain.

PGA Championship live updates, highlights from Round 4
All times Eastern
7:09 p.m.: And a two-putt par seals it: Phil Mickelson becomes the oldest major winner in golf history by winning the 2021 PGA Championship, his sixth major win all time.
7:08 p.m.: He sinks it. The stage is now Lefty's.
7:07 p.m.: Koepka's birdie attempt slips by just to the left. He has about a 2-footer for par. He's going to finish and let Mickelson take the (presumed) last two shots.
7:05 p.m.: Golf really is better with a gallery.
7:03 p.m.: Brooks is on the green, too — but he likely needed an eagle. This is Mickelson's to lose.
7:01 p.m.: Mickelson's approach lands about 10 feet away from the hole and the crowd absolutely erupts. That very well may have sealed this, and Mickelson's fist pump proves that.
6:58 p.m.: Looks like the entire gallery is following Mickelson.
6:56 p.m.: He's making it exciting, that's for sure. His ball's hanging out in the gallery next to some very excited fans.
6:55 p.m.: Mickelson's up next. He got a par, bogey and par in the first three rounds here, respectively.
6:54 p.m.: Koepka's drive is on the fairway, just on the fringe to the right.
6:53 p.m.: One last hole. Onto the par-4, 503-yard 18th.
6:52 p.m.: More good news for Lefty: Oosthuizen can't sink a birdie on the 18th hole, meaning he finishes the tournament at 2 under. Mickelson has a two-stroke lead heading into the final hole. For all intents and purposes, the only way he loses out on the championship is if he double-bogeys or if he bogeys and Koepka birdies.
6:52 p.m.: Mickelson centers his bogey attempt. That brings him to 1 over for the round and 6 under for the tournament.
6:51 p.m.: Koepka gains that stroke on Mickelson just by sinking his par attempt.
6:50 p.m.: Mickelson's par attempt misses left and rolls a foot past. He needs to sink this next shot to mitigate the damage.
6:49 p.m.: Koepka can't birdie on 17 either, though he may still gain a stroke on Mickelson if the latter can't sink this.
6:48 p.m.: He's out of the thick stuff but is looking at 15 feet to salvage par. He might just have to resign himself to losing one here.
6:46 p.m.: Mickelson's really staring at that ball. Trying to figure out how he wants to get out of this mess.
6:42 p.m.: Not the approach Mickelson was looking for there. His tee travels the entire distance of the green and lands in the thick stuff on the far end. He is absolutely going to have to hack at it.
6:38 p.m.: Mickelson and Koepka are off to Hole 17 (par 3, 231 yards).
6:37 p.m.: Koepka, meanwhile, sinks his second straight birdie to pull even with Oosthuizen at 4 under.
6:37 p.m.: And Oosthuizen very nearly birdies on 17 to keep it close, but just misses from the fringe. Mickelson couldn't have asked for anything better.
6:36 p.m.: Beautiful chip. He lands within a foot for birdie, which he sinks. He's back to even for the round, 7 under for the tournament and three up over Oosthuizen (4 under).
6:33 p.m.: The crowd is treating Mickelson to cheers of "Lefty" as he approaches the green on 16.
6:31 p.m.: Mickelson is a little too hot on his approach; the ball rolls off the green into the rough (you could see him saying, "Stop!") Either way he has a decent look at birdie here.
6:29 p.m.: Oosthuizen's approach on 17 (a par-3 hole) bounces off the green into the rough.
6:26 p.m.: He's off to a good start on the 16th, blasting a drive down the center of the fairway. It's the longest of the week for the hole (366 yards from the tee).
6:24 p.m.: Mickelson absolutely will want an insurance birdie here, at the least.
6:24 p.m.: Speaking of Oosthuizen, he nearly eagled on 16 to move to 5 under and just a shot off the lead ... but missed. He'll settle for the tap-in birdie and remain two behind Mickelson with two more holes.
6:21 p.m.: Mickelson and Koepka are onto Hole 16 (par 5, 583 yards). A good place to make moves for Mickelson, Koepka or Oosthuizen.
6:21 p.m.: Koepka, meanwhile, birdies the same hole from 3 feet to bet back to 3 under for the tournament. He is now tied for second place with Oosthuizen.
6:20 p.m.: His aim was dead on, but didn't get enough speed built up for the birdie. He settles for the two-putt par to remain at 1 over for the round.
6:17 p.m.: Mickelson hits a great rebound shot to land a GIR about 15 feet from the hole.
6:11 p.m.: Mickelson hits just his sixth of 12 fairways for the round. Perhaps that will give him some confidence in this final stretch.
6:10 p.m.: Mickelson's onto the par-4, 469-yard 15th hole. He birdied and got two pars in the first three rounds, respectively.
6:09 p.m.: Oosthuizen nearly sunk a 34-foot birdie to get another stroke back against Mickelson, but just missed it right. He has three holes left.
6:07 p.m.: He misses it. That's his second bogey in as many holes and fifth for the day. He'1 over for Round 4 and back to 6 under for the tournament. He has a three-stroke lead over Oosthuizen with four holes left.
6:05 p.m.: Mickelson chips himself onto the green for a very manageable 4-foot par attempt.
6 p.m.: Mickelson might be feeling nerves. His tee on the par-3 14th missed the green and rolled down the embankment. He's looking at an up-and-down par.
5:57 p.m.: Onto to Hole 14 (par 3, 220 yards).
5:56 p.m.: That bogey, Mickelson's fourth of the day, moves him to even for the round and 7 under for the tournament. He still has a four-stroke lead over Oosthuizen (3 under).
5:55 p.m.: As good a look as he could have expected in the circumstances. His ball comes to a rest a few inches to the right of the hole, and he settles for the walk-in bogey.
5:53 p.m.: Mickelson will take the drop and play his fourth shot from just on the green. Looks like a 35-footer for par.
5:50 p.m.: For the second time in as many days, Mickelson hit the drink on 13. That's going to cost him a stroke. It hit the embankment and rolled down into the reeds.
5:45 p.m.: Oosthuizen finally cleans up on 13, losing two strokes in the process to fall to 2 over for the round. He is now tied for second at 3 under with Koepka and Streelman. Mickelson has a five-stroke lead.
5:41 p.m.: Koepka's drive nearly hits someone in the gallery on the left side of the fairway. Oosthuizen is still cleaning up on the 12th, as well. It might be a little early, but. ...
5:40 p.m.: Onto Hole 13 (par 4, 464 yards). Mickelson bogeyed and double-bogeyed here in Rounds 2 and 3, but hits a dandy down the fairway.
5:40 p.m.: Koepka meanwhile salvages par for the hole to remain at 2 over for the round and 3 under for the tournament. He and Streelman are currently tied for third.
5:39 p.m.: Mickelson plays it safe and goes for the two-putt par. He remains at 8 under, but his lead should grow depending on Oosthuizen finishes the 13th hole.
5:37 p.m.: Oosthuizen's approach goes too far and is in the drink. Even if Mickelson gets a par here his lead should grow by a stroke, at least.
5:35 p.m.: Oosthuizen's back onto the green but has a ways to go to the green with just two shots left to par.
5:33 p.m.: Another excellent approach by Mickelson, who lands the GIR and is looking at 25 feet for birdie. Koepka's ball hits the green but rolls back into the fringe. He needs to start getting some birdies if he wants back in this.
5:32 p.m.: Meanwhile, Oosthuizen looks to be in the rough on Hole 13 (where he splashed in the water on Saturday).
5:27 p.m.: Mickelson's onto the par-4, 450-yard Hole 12, where he bogeyed on Saturday. He loves the drive, which is dead center of the fairway.
5:25 p.m.: Mickelson centers it. He's now 8 under for the tournament; Oosthuizen moves into sole possession of second place after a birdie on 12 brings him to 5 under. Koepka (3 under) is now in third place.
5:24 p.m.: Oh, man. Koepka's par attempt lips out to the left. That's another stroke to Mickelson's lead if he can sink his par attempt.
5:23 p.m.: Mickelson gets an amazing look from what had to be 40 feet. He missed the hole about 2 inches to the left, but has a 3-footer for par.
5:21 p.m.: A nice chip from Koepka gets him within a foot for par. Not ideal considering the circumstances, but better than giving up another stroke to Mickelson.
5:20 p.m.: Koepka gets a decent approach out of the sandbar short of the green, but can't get it to stick. He'll try for an up-and-down par from the incline.
5:19 p.m.: Mickelson couldn't have liked that. His approach is on the green but on the opposite side of the pin. He has a long putt for birdie.
5:15 p.m.: Lefty hits a nice little stinger, much to the enjoyment of the crowd.
5:13 p.m.: Looks like someone in the gallery might have moved Mickelson's ball after it landed? They're having a discussion about it. According to a patron someone picked it up and dropped it. Maybe rolled a foot away from its original spot.
5:08 p.m.: Mickelson's drive is left, into the gallery. Not insurmountable considering the distance left.
5:07 p.m.: Onto Hole 11 (par 5, 569 yards).
5:04 p.m.: Make that four strokes. Koepka bogeys to move to 2 over through 10 holes.
5:03 p.m.: Mickelson makes the most of his approach and sinks it. That puts him at 1 under for the day and 8 under for the tournament. His lead stretches to three strokes over Koepka.
5:02 p.m.: Koepka does a good job chopping his way out of the sand. He's looking at 4 feet to salvage par.
4:59 p.m.: Mickelson lands a beauty on the green, roughly 7-8 feet from birdie.
4:58 p.m.: Koepka is in the sand just short of the green.
4:52 p.m.: Mickelson's drive off 10 is immaculate. He has to feel good after that. Koepka's drive is in the first cut and comes to rest in the fringe.
4:46 p.m.: Onto Hole 10 (par 4, 440 yards). And, for those keeping score:
Hole 1: Brooks leads by 1
Hole 2: Phil leads by 2
Hole 3: Phil leads by 1
Hole 4: Phil leads by 1
Hole 5: Phil leads by 2
Hole 6: Tied
Hole 7: Phil leads by 2
Hole 8: Phil leads by 2
Hole 9: Phil leads by 2Halfway to go at the #PGAChamp. pic.twitter.com/SzmvLK6YkB

4:44 p.m.: Both Koepka and Mickelson sink their pars. Mickelson's even through nine, and Koepka is 1 over.
4:42 p.m.: Mickelson nearly gets a birdie to close out the front nine but misses just right. He has a likewise makeable par attempt.
4:41 p.m.: Koepka has a great line on the hole, but it's too fast and wide left. Very manageable par coming up for him.
4:36 p.m.: Excellent approach to the green by Mickelson. He lands the GIR and is looking a two-putt par from 20 feet. Koepka's swing and followthrough is a little wonky but he lands on the green as well ... maybe from about 30 feet downhill from the hole.
4:30 p.m.: Mickelson's drive is too far right, about 8 or 9 yards off of the fairway; Koepka's somewhere in the sandbar on the left.
4:29 p.m.: Onto Hole 9 (par 4, 469 yards).
4:28 p.m.: Koepka doesn't get enough cut on his birdie attempt and also settles for par. He remains two strokes back of Mickelson.
4:27 p.m.: Mickelson gets a good look at birdie but will settle for the two-putt par to remain at 7 under for the tournament.
4:22 p.m.: Mickelson's square on the green at the eighth, looking at a 30-footer for birdie; Koepka's on as well, looking at a 20-footer.
4:20 p.m.: Koepka salvages bogey. Mickelson (7 under) leads by two strokes over Koepka (5 under) heading into the par-3, 181-yard eighth hole.
4:19 p.m.: Slow and steady wins the race. Koepka sinks the birdie for a birdie, giving him a minimum two-shot lead, depending on how Koepka finishes up.
4:18 p.m.: Oof. Koepka's par attempt looked dead on, but it somehow slipped right past. He'll have a 3-footer to salvage bogey.
4:17 p.m.: Mickelson plays it safe and stops about 7 feet short of the hole. He'll attempt that for birdie.
4:16 p.m.: Koepka's on the green but is looking at a 24-footer for par, from the fringe.
4:14 p.m.: Koepka's out from behind the tree but still in the thick stuff. He'll need an up and down for par, unless he can pull something out of his hat like Mickelson did on Hole 5.
4:11 p.m.: We musn't forget about Oosthuizen, either:
4:10 p.m.: Mickelson's also in the rough by the tree, but has no obstacles between him and the hole.
4:09 p.m.: Uh-oh. Koepka overshot his approach and landed behind a tree in the gallery, right side of the green. He very nearly missed the water.
4:02 p.m.: Mickelson has a chance to get that one back on the par-5, 563-yard Hole 7. His drive is a beauty.
4 p.m.: Meanwhile, Koepka sinks a 2-foot birdie, giving him the co-lead with Mickelson at 6 under.
3:58 p.m.: Mickelson has a decent look at the par attempt ... but it's just to the right. He'll settle for the tap-in bogey.
3:53 p.m.: Mickelson breaks out the iron; his approach goes a little right into the rough. He's looking at an up-and-down par, here.
3:48 p.m.: Mickelson didn't get enough cut on his drive, and his ball rests in the rough near some spectators. Koepka gets the cut he wants, but lands in the sandbar running the length of the hole up the lefthand side.
3:46 p.m.: Onto Hole 6 (Par 4, 445 yards).
3:44 p.m.: Koepka settles for the two-putt par, giving Mickelson a two-stroke lead.
3:43 p.m.: Mickelson birdied from the sand! Incredible! That drops him to even for the day and back to 7 under for the round.
3:41 p.m.: There's more on the course than just Mickelson and Koepka today. Check out this excellent birdie from Padraig Harrington.
3:40 p.m.: Mickelson's in the sand to the left of the green. Going to need an up and down to salvage par, most likely.
3:39 p.m.: Koepka's on the green, looking at 20 feet for birdie.
3:36 p.m.: Onto Hole 5 (par 3, 214 yards).
3:35 p.m.: Mickelson sinks his, as well. He and Koepka remain at 6 under and 5 under, respectively.
3:32 p.m.: Excellent putt lands a foot short of a par attempt for Mickelson. Koepka's went a little longer, but he's got about 3 feet to the hole, which he sinks
3:30 p.m.: Both Mickelson and Koepka are on the green, and both are looking at two-putt pars.
3:27 p.m.: Mickelson's on the fairway on Hole 4, past the sand traps. He's got a good look at the green from here.
3:22 p.m.: Well, Hole 3 beat each of Mickelson, Koepka and Streelman. Onto Hole 4 (par 4, 479 yards).
3:22 p.m.: Wow. The very next shot, Koepka's footer for birdie lips out. He settles for the par and remains at 5 under.
3:20 p.m.: Oh man, Mickelson's putt stops a half-inch short of the lip. A tap-in bogey for him drops him top 6 under.
3:18 p.m.: He's on the green but the ball comes to rest roughly 30 feet from the pin. He'll need that for par.
3:17 p.m.: Mickelson's chip fails to stick on the green. He needs an up and down for par.
3:11 p.m.: Mickelson and Koepka are off to the par-4, 294 yard Hole 3. Mickelson gets a nice drive off the tee and lands on the fairway, but it bounces off into the rough. Still a very makeable birdie from here.
3:09 p.m.: And Streelman bogeys on 3, giving Mickelson a two-stroke lead.
3:08 p.m.: A double bogey for Koepka on Hole 2 drops him to 5 under. Mickelson is now the outright leader.
3:07 p.m.: It looks as if Koepka and Streelman are about to gain some strokes as well, giving Mickelson the outright lead.
3:06 p.m.: A beautiful chip from Lefty gets him a foot away from the hole for birdie, which he sinks. He's back to even for the round and 7 under for the tournament.
3:05 p.m.: Koepka's on the green, but is looking at a 10-footer for bogey.
3:05 p.m.: Oof, Koepka's chop goes all of 2 feet. He needs to hit the hole from here just to salvage par.
3:02 p.m.: Koepka's in the rough just past some sand by the green. That'll be tough to sink for a birdie.
3 p.m.: Meanwhile, Kevin Streelman sinks two birdies in two holes to pull even with Mickelson at 6 under. They both trail Koepka at 7 under ... for now.
3 p.m.: Mickelson's approach clears the pitch, goes just by the hole and rolls up the embankment. He's looking at 20 feet for an up-and-down birdie.
2:58 p.m.: So Koepka wasn't in the marshland, but in the sand. He hits the green on his approach shot and is in contention for an up-and-down birdie on the par-5 second.
2:52 p.m.: Mickelson's tee is much better, resting on the left side of the fairway.
2:51 p.m.: Koepka's tee off 2 is way left ... looks like it hit some marshland.
2:43 p.m.:And not a minute later, Koepka sinks an 8-footer for birdie to take the lead at 7 under.
2:42 p.m.:Mickelson didn't get enough cut on his attempt. The ball stays just right and he settles for a three-putt bogey to fall to 6 under for the tournament.
2:40 p.m.:Not near enough oomph on that putt. Mickelson's looking at a 10-footer to salvage par.
2:37 p.m.: Mickelson's barely on the green on the far side of the hole. He'll have a lag putt for birdie here, but it's more likely he'll get a two-putt par.
2:33 p.m.: Next up is Koepka on the tee. ... Did I hear a few boos?
2:31 p.m.: Mickelson tees off on 1 and is just off the fairway to the left. He gives a nod, and we're on our way on the par-4, 402-yard hole.
1:22 p.m.: And here's the leader himself.
1:07 p.m.: He tees off with Mickelson at 2:30. ...
12:28 p.m.: Ancer is locked in on the greens, getting six birdies to move to 6 under for the round and even for the tournament.
12:22 p.m.: More moves from Rose:
12:01 p.m.: A third eagle for the day, this one from Patrick Reed:
11:47 a.m.: Justin Rose, making moves:
11:27 a.m.: Jason Day has enjoyed some excellent approach shots today.
11:09 a.m.: And there's Chan Kim with an eagle!
10:58 a.m.: Excellent work across the pitch for Matt Jones.
10:15 a.m.: A nice eagle putt for Stewart Cink:
9:35 a.m.: Garrick Higgo could do a lot worse than six birdies in the front nine.
