Of a total of 1,481 COVID-19 tests administered the week of March 8-14, only one returned a positive test, Virginia announced on Monday. That’s a positive test rate of 0.07 percent.
That singular positive test, of course, is connected to the Virginia Cavaliers Men’s Basketball team, who as you already know, withdrew from the ACC Tournament last week. The University tests both student-athletes and staff, and while Virginia hasn’t announced who it was, head coach Tony Bennett did tell the media that the player who tested positive won’t be available this weekend for the NCAA Tournament.
The players and staff have been following contact tracing and quarantining protocols, and will not be practicing in person. They hope to travel to Indianapolis on Friday and if so, will get their first practice in then. Today’s release at least confirms that, at least as of last night, there have not been any new positive cases since the team withdrew on Thursday.
Schools have until Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. to inform the NCAA if they will not be able to participate in the Tournament, at which point the NCAA will replace them with either another team from that conference (if the withdrawing team was the only team representing the conference) or one of the following schools in order: Louisville, Colorado State,Saint Louis, then Ole Miss.
