SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Rockies baseball fans are expected to return to Coors Field for the 2021 season.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) approved a variance for fans in the stands “pending a few adjustments,” according to a department spokesperson who did not identify themselves. It was unclear what percentage of capacity would be allowed entry to games.

Rockies owner Dick Monfort was not ready to confirm that the variance had been approved.

“We expect to have fans but we are still working with the state,” Monfort told The Denver Post Thursday night.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, fans were not allowed to attend any of the 30 homes games the Rockies played during last year’s 60-game season.

The Rockies begin their Cactus League season Sunday against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. The ballpark is allowing limited capacity for those spring training games. Crowds of 2,200, about 17% of capacity, will be allowed at Salt River Fields. All of the tickets for those games have been sold.

The Rockies are scheduled to open the season on April 1 when they host the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers at Coors Field.
