Ken Roczen had another victorious night in Indianapolis, scoring his third consecutive Supercross (Rnd 6) win in the past seven days. As a result, he adds to his points lead over Cooper Webb, which has grown to 16 points. The 2021 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship will now make its way to Orlando, Florida, for stop number seven on the tour.
Roczen Sweeps Indy Supercrosses
450SX
The tricky right-handed first turn set the tone for the 450SX main, as the class’s heavy hitters bombarded their way down the start straight. Justin Barcia (TLD/Red Bull/GasGas), Roczen (Honda HRC), and Adam Cianciarulo (Monster Energy Kawasaki) all shuffled and bumped together just before the holeshot line. It was Barcia who was credited with the holeshot, but Roczen quickly slipped by and took control of the race lead. As they completed the first lap, the order ran Roczen, Barcia, Webb (Red Bull KTM), Cianciarulo, and Eli Tomac (Monster Energy Kawasaki).
While closely following the race leader, Barcia nearly T-boned the number-94 of Roczen after the big triple jump. Both riders stayed upright, but this allowed Webb and Tomac to close in.
Roczen and Barcia continued to hold a slight advantage over Webb and Tomac until about the halfway mark in the race. That’s when Barcia lost his balance on the tricky “curbed” corner that cut across the start straight. His bike stood up and allowed Webb to slip by into the second-place spot. Tomac tried to capitalize on this mistake, too, but after a quick exchange, Barcia set his sights back on the number-two rider, Webb.
With just three laps to go, the front runners found themselves deep in lapped traffic. Barcia was attempting to make his way around Vince Friese (Smartop/Bull Frog Spas/Motoconcepts Honda), but Friese cross-jumped just before the triple and collected the number-51. An oncoming Tomac could not see the downed GasGas machine in time and crashed into the opening-round winner. Tomac remounted and finish seventh.
Barcia on the other hand was slow to get up and crossed the line a distant 19th.
Marvin Musquin (Red Bull KTM) was the benefactor of this crash, passing both riders and landing himself on the podium in third place.
Up front, Roczen continued to log consistent laps ahead of a hard-charging Webb.
Webb pulled up to the back of the factory Honda machine but was never close enough to make one of his now-famous last-lap passes.
Roczen would lead wire-to-wire and take home his third consecutive 450SX main event, sweeping Supercross’ Indianapolis residency.
Malcolm Stewart (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha) tied his career-best with a fourth-place finish.
Jason Anderson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) returned to action and had his best finish of the 2021 campaign with a sixth-place finish in the main event. His teammate Zach Osborne would finish 10th.
With his third consecutive win, Roczen stretched out his points to 16 over Webb, 139-122. Tomac is third with 114. Cianciarulo moved up a spot to fourth with 105, while Barcia slipped back a position with 96.
Big Win For Craig In 250SX East

The 250SX East division is down yet another front runner this week, as Michael Mosiman (TLD/Red Bull/GasGas) suffered a broken hand in practice and was forced to sit out the evening’s program. He is now added to the list of injured title contenders along with Austin Forkner (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki) and RJ Hampshire (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna).
The 250SX main event started off with some fast-paced action. Mitchell Oldenburg (Muc-Off Honda) claimed the holeshot, with points leader Colt Nichols (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha) and his teammate Christian Craig in tow.
Nichols quickly grabbed control of the lead but cross-rutted through the first major rhythm section. This costly mistake catapulted him off the bike and into the middle of the main racing line. Lucky for the Yamaha rider, neither he nor the bike was damaged in the crash. Nichols would remount dead last.
Meanwhile, it was Craig who benefited from this first-lap mishap. Craig jumped into the lead position and would never look back.
Mitchell Oldenburg (Muc Off Honda) was up front as well, finding himself in the second position during the opening stages of the race.
A determined Jo Shimoda (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki) put a strong pass on Oldenburg for second around the five-minute mark.
Jett Lawrence (Honda HRC) was back in the mix this week after suffering two scary get-offs during Tuesday night’s race. The Aussie rider claimed victory in his heat race but had a bad start in the main event. He began picking off a handful of riders at a time during the opening laps and eventually found himself locked in a heated battle with the charging Nichols—the number-64 machine had moved up to the fifth position by the halfway mark of the race. The two would push themselves up to the back of Oldenburg who continued to ride in the final podium position. This game of cat-and-mouse would eventually allow Lawrence to set up and pass Oldenburg with Nichols shortly following suit just a lap later.
The lapped riders, however, held up Lawrence and spoiled his chances at a vital rhythm section. Nichols capitalized and moved into the third spot. Lawrence had an ill-fated counterattack that was again plagued by lappers, causing him to land on the side of the finish line and go off track. This would seal the deal for the podium finishers as Craig took the victory, Shimoda earned his second career podium, and Nichols charged all the way to third.
Nichols saw his points lead shrink from 11 to six. Shimoda is third but 18 points behind Craig. Lawrence in fourth, 17 points behind Shimoda. CN

Cooper Webb appears to be the rider to beat based on his performance this afternoon during practice/qualifying for the Indianapolis Supercross Rnd 6 of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship. The Red Bull KTM Team rider topped both the timed qualifier sessions on a track that seems to suit his riding style. The track is said to be somewhat tight and very technical with a number of options through the several rhythm sections. There’s only one small whoop section and a lot of jumps and turns (most of them right turns), which should play into Webb’s hands—he’s known for his success on tight tracks that place a lot of emphasis on corner speed.
“The track is really tricky,” Webb said. “You have to be smooth and aggressive at the same time.”
As far as the dirt compared to Indy 1 and 2, he said, “It is similar. It’s hardened up a little bit,” which means fewer and not as deep ruts as before. “I think it’s a good track,” he added.
Webb, however, doesn’t have a lot of breathing room. Less than a 10th of a second separates him and the next-best rider, Eli Tomac (Monster Energy/Kawasaki), and Tomac’s teammate Adam Cianciarulo isn’t far back in third.
Malcolm Stewart (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha) put in a serious heater and is fourth quickest ahead of Justin Barcia (TLD/Red Bull/GasGas), Zach Osborne (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna), Marvin Musquin (Red Bull KTM), Ken Roczen (Honda HRC), Dylan Ferrandis (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha) and Justin Brayton (Muc-Off Honda).
The top 10 riders are all within a second of each other.
Jason Anderson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) is back in the mix after dislocating his finger at the last race. He qualified 13th.
In the 250SX East class, Colt Nichols (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha) continues to ride superbly. He’s won the last three races and is the top qualifier going into tonight’s program. His teammate, Christian Craig, the closest rider to him in the race for the number-one plate is more than a second and a half down on Nichols in fifth.
Jett Lawrence (Honda HRC) is back after pulling out of last Tuesday’s race with an injured shoulder, appears to be in race-ready condition. He is just six-100ths of second off Nichols in second, followed closely by Michael Mosiman (TLD/Red Bull/GasGas) and Jo Shimoda (Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki).
