Lottery officials said there is a winning ticket for the Mega Millions jackpot on Friday. The drawing marked the third largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history at $1 billion.
The winning ticket was sold in Michigan. More information on the specific store location it was sold at is expected over the weekend.
The winning numbers on Friday, Jan. 22 were: 42-26-60-50-4. The Gold Mega Ball was 24.
In addition to a billion dollar winner, there are 10 $1 million winners from the drawings. Lottery officials said 10 tickets sold in Florida, Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia matched the five white numbers.
Millions of tickets were sold nationwide for the drawing which marked the longest in Mega Millions history to go without a jackpot win. Mega Millions is played in 44 states, including Massachusetts. Tickets cost $2 each and the drawing is held at 11 p.m. ET on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Prior to Friday, the last jackpot winner was in September. The odds of winning the jackpot are about 1 in 302 million.
The last jackpot win in Massachusetts in 2017.
Mavis Wanczyk, a mother of two from Western Massachusetts, won the $758.7 million Powerball prize in August of that year, the largest single-ticket Powerball prize in U.S. history.
“It was a chance. A chance I had to take,” Wanczyk told reporters when she arrived at lottery headquarters to claim her winnings.
Wanczyk, a nurse at Mercy Medical Center for 32 years, realized she’d won while with a coworker from the hospital. She called the Springfield hospital the next morning and said she was taking early retirement.
She chose the numbers based on a series of birthdays and numbers special to her.
Bob Bolduc, who owns the Chicopee Pride location where Wanczyk bought her ticket, received $50,000 for selling the winning ticket. He donated the entire commission to local charities in support of children’s education.
