Booze in Bronson Park? Kalamazoo may allow drinking there starting New Year’s Eve - MLive.com

KALAMAZOO, MI — The city of Kalamazoo is considering ringing in the new year with a new rule to allow drinking alcohol in Bronson Park, by adding the popular green space to a downtown zone where open booze containers are welcome, with some caveats.

The Kalamazoo City Commission previously approved a measure to allow people to carry cups of alcoholic beverages in a specific part of downtown. The city’s “social district” has a set of rules, which includes the use of approved cups only, and drinking of alcoholic beverages purchased at approved businesses.

In November, the city expanded the area to include additional businesses such as Bell’s Brewery, though the expansion originally did not include Bronson Park because the city’s local ordinance governing drinking in parks was in conflict with the state’s act that allows social districts for drinking, Deputy City Manager Jeff Chamberlain said.

Downtown zone will allow drinking and walking in Kalamazoo

The Kalamazoo City Commission approved a map on Nov. 16 to expand the area where people can purchase and drink alcohol downtown.

On Nov. 16, the city commission passed a revised motion to expand the district into Bronson Park, but only after the city’s ordinance is updated to allow it.

On Dec. 7, the city commission held a first reading of the ordinance to allow drinking in Bronson Park consistent with the state’s social districts act, which allows municipalities to create the zones for drinking and walking.

On Monday, Dec. 21, the commission is expected to approve the ordinance that would allow limited drinking in Bronson Park consistent with the state’s social districts act, Chamberlain said.

If approved on Dec. 21, the new ordinance would go into effect on Dec. 31, Chamberlain said.

Drinking is allowed within the approved designated spaces downtown seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; and 10 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday.

The only drinks allowed are those purchased from businesses participating in the refreshment area program. No cans, glass bottles, or outside drinks are permitted within the boundaries per state and local law, according to Downtown Kalamazoo Partnership.
