What happens now that Michigan’s election results are certified - MLive.com

In a dramatic, hours-long meeting, Michigan’s Board of State Canvassers certified Michigan’s election results earlier this week, making President-elect Joe Biden’s win in the state over incumbent President Donald Trump official.

The typically under-the-radar formal confirmation of the final vote tally in Michigan was anything but this year as the Trump campaign and Republican party faithful sought to delay the inevitable.

Now that the window to request a recount has closed, Biden’s 154,188-vote lead over Trump in Michigan stands — the last big step is for Michigan’s 16 electors to cast their votes for Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris next month.

After state canvassers voted 3-0-1 to certify the state’s election results, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed off on the results to formally recognize the slate of Michigan electors for Biden and Harris.

That document gets sent to the federal government, and electors will meet in the Michigan Capitol’s Senate chamber Monday, Dec. 14 to certify the results.

In Michigan, parties select their slate of 16 presidential electors in advance of the election, and the party of the winning candidate sends its slate of electors to cast Michigan’s electoral votes for president and vice president. Michigan has an elector for each Congressional district and two at-large electors.

State statute specifies that each elector must cast their vote for candidates of the political party that nominated them. Failure to do so “constitutes a resignation from the office of elector, his vote shall not be recorded and the remaining electors shall forthwith fill the vacancy,” the law states.

Michigan’s 16 electors this cycle are:

  • Chris Cracchiolo, representing the 1st District
  • Timothy Smith, representing the 2nd District
  • Blake Mazurek, representing the 3rd District
  • Bonnie J. Lauria, representing the 4th District
  • Bobbie Walton, representing the 5th District
  • Mark Miller, representing the 6th District
  • Connor Wood, representing the 7th District
  • Robin Smith, representing the 8th District
  • Walter C. Herzing III, representing the 9th District
  • Carolyn Holley, representing the 10th District
  • Susan Nichols, representing the 11th District
  • Steven Rzeppa, representing the 12th District
  • Helen Moore, representing the 13th District
  • Michael Kerwin, representing the 14th District
  • Chuck Browning, at-large elector
  • Marseille Allen, at-large elector

It’s unclear whether Trump’s campaign will pursue any additional challenges to Michigan’s certified general election results. Legal challenges from Republicans alleging voter fraud or election misconduct in the November election have been rejected by Michigan courts, and the window for candidates to call for a recount has closed - state law gives candidates 48 hours after results are certified to make that request.

John James, the Republican U.S. Senate candidate who’d also been raising claims of election irregularities ahead of Monday’s certification, formally conceded his race to Democratic U.S. Sen. Gary Peters Tuesday evening.

Moving forward, there will likely be additional scrutiny into the clerical errors that cropped up around the state during the election.

The Secretary of State plans to conduct a risk-limiting audit of the presidential election results, and the legislature is expected to continue its investigation into the state’s election system led by the House and Senate oversight committees.

Michigan county clerks vouched for the integrity of the November election in a joint oversight hearing days before the Board of State Canvassers certified results.

House and Senate oversight chairs recently told MLive they’d continue hearing from witnesses about the election process, and a Senate Oversight hearing regarding absentee ballot counting at the TCF Center in Detroit is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. Tuesday.
