New Tech Allows for Less Contact at Hancock Airport - Spectrum News

Last year 2.8 million people flew the Sunday after Thanksgiving, making it the busiest recorded travel day in the history of the TSA.

This year, we won't be seeing numbers anywhere near that, but a spokesperson for TSA tells Spectrum News that new security measures will make travel safer for the people who do choose to travel.

Now at security checkpoints at Syracuse Hancock International Airport, you'll find what are called Credential Authentification Technology, or CAT Machines. These new machines will allow for travelers to insert their photo ID into a slot, and have it instantly read, eliminating the need for an up-close hand-off of the ID to a TSA agent.

TSA says this measure was a routine upgrade to its security system, but the tech will better allow workers to catch false IDs. The system doesn't eliminate every single point of contact between TSA and travelers, but it does make it possible to cut down on interactions between travelers and check-in agents.

"But also the equipment is so smart that it is able to validate that you are ticketed to fly out of that airport at that time, so you don't need the boarding pass. Because you're not handing your boarding pass to a TSA officer, it's one less touchpoint, and in a pandemic, that's important," said TSA spokesperson Lisa Farbstein. "You do want to, of course, still print out your boarding pass, or have the electronic pass with you, becuase you'll need that at the gate to board the plane."

Since the beginning of the pandemic, TSA has made some extra changes to its security process. Most notably, it's allowing passengers to carry up to 12 ounces of hand sanitizer on board with them, rather than the usual cap of 3 ounces for any liquid.

Allowing for more sanitizer is a temporary change, meant to keep travelers safe during the pandemic. If you do bring a bigger bottle of sanitizer with you, it will need to be screened separately from the rest of your luggage.

Farbstein said if they had to screen every liquid the way they're checking bottles of sanitizer, security checkpoints would take exponentially longer to get through, even with fewer people traveling.

Some additional things to note: If you are headed to the airport, make sure you know the rules related to travel, both for the state you're headed to, and for New York as you head back home. New York now lets you test out of the mandatory 14-day quarantine process, but you must show proof of a negative test within three days of arriving back to New York.

Then, you have to quarantine for three days upon arrival to New York, and take a test on the fourth day. If you aren't gone for more than 24 hours, then the testing requirements don't apply. Also, if you're going to a state that borders New York, you are exempt.

All air travelers do still have to fill out the Traveler Health Form, but you can save time and do it ahead of time by going online and downloading the form.
