Ballot counting in N.J. isn’t over. Here’s the latest results from county and local races. - NJ.com

A week after an unprecedented Election Day, another deadline has arrived: it’s the last day for New Jersey counties to accept ballots mailed in and postmarked by Nov. 3.

Although most major news outlets have already called the heated presidential race for Democrat Joe Biden, the counting continues in county board of elections across the state for county and local races. Many of the local board of education and council races still hang in the balance, pending the last of the ballots that election workers have to tally.

Some election clerks say that final results will be posted closer to Thanksgiving Day.

The deadline for all New Jersey counties to accept any mail-in ballots postmarked by Nov. 3 is Nov. 10 at 8 p.m. After that deadline, county election offices can count provisional ballots.

Some residents who cast their votes by mail will receive cure letters, forms that notify them of signature deficiencies and allow them to correct their signatures. Those residents will have until Nov. 18 to return the cure letter.

In Hunterdon County, the county board of elections will begin researching eligibility for provisional ballots on Wednesday, said Beth Thompson, the board’s supervisor and administrator.

As of Tuesday morning, there were approximately 300 ballots that needed to be “cured,” she said, but no cure letters had been returned in the mail on Tuesday. After the Nov. 18 deadline for all cure letters to be returned, the board of elections will finish scanning in all eligible ballots by Nov. 19, she said.

“On November 19, the last of the ballots that will be canvassed will be those ballots that have not met our standard for our audit, which means 100 of the same ballot style,” said Thompson.

The elections board of commissioners will meet Nov. 20 and complete their certification requirement before submitting it to the elections clerk, she said.

In Monmouth County, the counting process was “going very well,” said Allan Roth, secretary of the County Board of Elections, with the count of vote-by-mail ballots expected to be completed as soon as end of Tuesday.

“We should be done with provisional by Friday,” said Roth. "Hopefully earlier than that.

Either way, the election must be certified by county boards of election by Nov. 20, said Roth. At this point, no additional ballots can be scanned in or counted.

It is expected that final results will be posted Nov. 19 or Nov. 20, after the Nov. 18 deadline for cure letter return.
