Texans vs. Chiefs score, results: Patrick Mahomes, Clyde Edwards-Helaire power KC - Sporting News

sisilihya.blogspot.com

Patrick Mahomes didn't miss a beat Thursday night in the first game of the 2020 NFL season, leading his Chiefs to a 34-20 win over the Texans.

Mahomes threw for three touchdowns on 24-of-32 passing and didn't need to exert himself late in the game with the reigning Super Bowl champs in control. He found familiar targets on each of his three scoring throws: Travis Kelce, Sammy Watkins and Tyreek Hill.

But the Chiefs also enjoyed key contributions from newcomers on each side of the ball. Rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown, while rookie cornerback L'Jarius Sneed intercepted Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Houston trailed 31-7 before pulling closer in garbage time. It won't get much easier schedule-wise for the Texans, who meet the Ravens and Steelers next. There's already concern, then, that the team will enter the middle of the campaign in a bleak situation from which it might struggle to crawl out.

David Johnson did average 7 yards per carry for the Texans and racked up 109 all-purpose yards as a bright spot for coach Bill O'Brien's squad.

Texans vs. Chiefs results, highlights from Thursday night football

11:25 p.m.: Final: Chiefs 34, Texans 20.

11:19 p.m.: FIELD GOAL, Chiefs. Butker nails his second easy one of the night, this one from just 19 yards out.

11:13 p.m.: The Chiefs recover the onside kick.

11:11 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, Texans. Watson holds onto a read option and jogs into the end zone untouched. There is 2:38 on the clock, so an onside kick is upcoming. 31-20, Kansas City.

11:08 p.m.: Houston gets the ball back with 5:39 remaining.

10:58 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, Texans. Jordan Akins hauls in a pass over the middle, though the play probably should have been waved off for a false start. The two-point attempt is no good. 31-13, Kansas City.

10:56 p.m.: The Texans convert a fourth-and-8 with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter. Regardless of how this drive finishes, though, it's probably too late for Houston.

10:45 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, Chiefs. Mahomes gets Tyreek Hill involved this time on a simple crossing route in the end zone. 31-7, Kansas City.

10:35 p.m.: Interception. Watson makes an ill-advised, forced throw as he's hit and it wobbles into the hands of rookie defensive back L'Jarius Sneed. Sneed runs his pick back into Texans territory.

End of third quarter: Chiefs 24, Texans 7

10:27 p.m.: The Chiefs get around midfield before their drive stalls. But they bleed out the clock to just over a minute left in the third quarter, and considering their lead, that's a successful possession.

10:19 p.m.: Kansas City brings pressure on third-and-7, forcing Watson to run out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage. The quarterback appears frustrated as he heads to the bench and the special teams unit comes out.

10:10 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, Chiefs. Edwards-Helaire goes over 100 yards for the game with a 27-yard scoring run up the middle. He's having a special debut. 24-7, Chiefs.

10:05 p.m.: The second half is underway. Kansas City starts with the ball to open the third quarter.

Halftime: Chiefs 17, Texans 7

9:45 p.m.: FIELD GOAL, Chiefs. Mahomes works his magic to get Harrison Butker in range for a 29-yard chip shot as time expires. 17-7, Kansas City.

9:45 p.m.: NO GOOD. The Texans miss a 51-yard field goal attempt with 26 seconds left in the half.

9:32 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, Chiefs. Watkins gets his touchdown anyway, snagging a third-and-goal pass. 14-7, Kansas City.

9:28 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, Chiefs (NEGATED BY REVIEW). Sammy Watkins catches a short ball and almost does the rest with his legs. A review rules he was down at the 1.

9:27 p.m.: First-and-goal for the Chiefs.

9:24 p.m.: Edwards-Helaire looks really, really good right now. He's averaging more than 5 yards per carry so far.

9:18 p.m.: After the Texans punt, the Chiefs pick up a quick first down and are seemingly cruising their way forward again.

9:08 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, Chiefs. Mahomes links up with Travis Kelce in the end zone. 7-7.

End of first quarter: Texans 7, Chiefs 0

9:04 p.m.: Edwards-Helaire's first NFL chunk play has the Chiefs moving as the first quarter comes to a close.

8:54 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, Texans. David Johnson, who has been shifty throughout the first quarter, sprints down the sideline for 19 yards and a score. 7-0, Houston.

8:51 p.m.: Watson seems to be finding a groove, moving his team past midfield with completions to Darren Fells, Will Fuller and Brandin Cooks.

8:44 p.m.: The Chiefs are forced to punt after having their score taken away.

8:38 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN (NEGATED BY REVIEW), Chiefs. Mahomes went deep to Demarcus Robinson, who stretched out for what was ruled on the field to be a touchdown catch. The ball came out at the very end, and they reviewed whether he hung on long enough. The call has been reversed, wiping the touchdown off the board.

8:32 p.m.: Houston goes three-and-out.

8:29 p.m.: The Chiefs kick the ball off and the NFL season has begun.

8:25 p.m.: Start time is slightly delayed.

8:18 p.m.: The Chiefs show off their Super Bowl banner before the game.

8:05 p.m.: Andy Reid is in danger of fogging up his line of vision with a visor over his glasses.
