While the Marist College men’s and women’s basketball teams will learn their schedules for the upcoming season next week, both now have an idea of which days of the week they might be playing on.
The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference this past week proposed a schedule model for the men’s and women’s basketball seasons. The men would play games Tuesdays and Fridays, while women’s games would take place Wednesdays and Saturdays. The extra day between games would allow for athletes and staff to meet COVID-19 testing standards.
The model must be approved by the NCAA Board of Directors, who will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 22. The NCAA set the college basketball season’s start date for Nov. 25.

The proposal does not permit fans to be in attendance until after Dec. 23, at the earliest. The MAAC would then review the policy on attendance at that time and make changes, if local and state regulations allow.
Should the model be approved, non-conference games would be played between Nov. 25 and Dec. 6, as well as Dec. 22-23. Conference play would start Dec. 8. The NCAA announced college basketball teams will be allowed to play no more than 27 games this season, and teams must play a minimum of 13 regular season games. No exhibitions or scrimmages are permitted.
In the final week before the MAAC Tournament, games that may have been postponed due to COVID-19 can be made up, according to the conference's suggested model.
There have already been cancellations due to coronavirus.
In December, the Marist men were slated to take on the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in the inaugural Basketball Hall of Fame London Showcase at the O2 Arena. In May, Marist announced the game was called off due to the pandemic, and will be made up in 2022.
The MAAC Tournament is scheduled for March 9-13 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. The tournament was shut down last year and never completed, as fears rose amid the pandemic.
The Marist men had been eliminated in the first round before the tournament was called off, while the women had reached the semifinals. Eleven teams — six men’s teams and five women’s teams, including Marist — were still in contention for conference titles before the tournament was cancelled.
Despite the tournament’s cancellation, the MAAC named the Siena men’s team and the Rider women’s team conference champions, based on seeding. Both were the top seeds entering the tournament.
Marist had shared the regular-season women's basketball title with Rider, with identical records. The Red Foxes and Broncs had split their two meetings this past season, though Rider was named the top seed based on tiebreakers.
