2020 RedBud 2 Motocross Results: Adam Cianciarulo reached a career milestone when he won the first 450MX moto at the RedBud 2 National Motocross. It was his first career moto win in the premier class, and then he followed that up with an even bigger milestone when he captured his first 450MX overall victory after taking third place in the second moto. His 1-3 combo was more than enough to give the 450MX-class rookie the overall victory. If it wasn’t for a small mishap with a lapped rider in moto two, Cianciarulo might’ve won both motos. Unfortunately for Cianciarulo, his legions of fans couldn’t be there to celebrate with him, since spectators were not allowed to attend either RedBud 1 (on Friday) or RedBud 2 (on Sunday) Nationals.

The moto and overall wins weren’t handed to Cianciarulo, either. He worked for them in what has to be one of the most competitive 450MX classes in recent years. The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider did take the holeshot in both motos but had to defend the point position late in the first moto from his teammate Eli Tomac (who was on a charge) and had to regroup and hold on to third place in the second moto after colliding with a lapped rider while leading on lap 10 of the 16-lap race.

“After the first moto, I felt more comfortable up front,” Cianciarulo said. “I wanted to go 1-1, but I’m so happy and so proud.”

It was vintage Blake Baggett in the second 450MX moto. After finishing sixth in the first moto, Baggett, on the Rocky Mountain ATV-MC/WPS KTM, was consistently the fastest rider on the track, oftentimes in the first moto, as well. (He was also the fastest qualifier.) But Baggett put it all together in the second moto for a win, taking advantage of a couple of crashes by other riders and reeling in moto leader Zach Osborne (who inherited the lead when Cianciarulo fell) and passing the points leader. In the closing laps, Baggett pulled away from Osborne and took the win 13 seconds clear of the Husqvarna rider. His 6-1 gave Baggett second overall on the day.

“It’s funny, some days you try so hard but you’re in the back of the pack and can’t get in the top 10, and today everything was connecting,” Baggett said. “I was starting to doubt myself a little bit. I’ve had a little devil on my shoulder, but it feels good to get the win.”

Although Osborne didn’t get the win it was a productive day for the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Team rider. Even with a 4-2, which got him third overall, he was still able to gain some ground on the two riders nearest him in the championship going into RedBud 2, the second National MX in just three days. After dropping a few points to both Musquin and Tomac in the first moto, Osborne, who admitted feeling a little fatigued heading into Monday’s race, managed to get those points back and then some in the second moto.

In that second moto, he finished two spots ahead of Musquin and five ahead of Tomac, who got caught up in a major bottleneck and went down in the first turn and had to fight his way up through the pack the rest of the way.

Osborne now leads runner-up Musquin by 28 points and new third place holder Cianciarulo by 42 points. Tomac’s chances to retain the number-one plate is slipping away. He now trails Osborne by 47 points with four rounds left in the nine-race championship.

Justin Barcia, who went 5-10 on the day (he too went down in the second moto first turn) for fifth overall, is fifth in points, 52 points back.

Baggett is sixth, 66 points behind Osborne.

RJ Hampshire took the overall victory in MX2.

A new winner in 2020 emerged from the 250MX class. RJ Hampshire came out on top. His keys to success were fast and consistent starts. While other riders struggled with their gates, Hampshire put his Rockstar Energy Husqvarna into the lead group of both motos and ended up going 2-3 for the overall win, while second-place finisher Dylan Ferrandis (Monster Energy/Star Racing Yamaha) took second overall with a 5-2.

Ferrandis was in a way consistent, too, but not in a good way. He had two bad starts and had to play catch-up like he’s done so many times this season.

The moto winners, Shane McElrath and Jeremy Martin, had lopsided results. McElrath won moto one but spun off the line in the second moto and ended up 10th, his 1-10 giving him third overall.

Shan McElrath won the first 250MX moto but couldn’t make up for a bad start in the second moto.

Martin, on the other hand, was gunning for a podium in the first moto when Ferrandis tried a questionable pass on the Geico Honda rider which resulted in both riders hitting the ground. An obvious angry Martin got the worse of it and ended up 11th in the moto for fourth overall.

As a result, the championship leader, Martin, lost three points to runner-up Ferrandis on the day, but still leads the 250MX Championship by nine points.

Hampshire is third but 37 points down on Ferrandis and four up on McElrath. CN

QUALIFYING

2020 RedBud 2 Motocross Results: The second RedBud race of the weekend is up and running on this unique Monday Labor Day race. The track is unchanged from Friday’s race but the threat of rain prevented the track from being ripped as deeply as before. The rain, however, never materialized, so the track conditions will be different from Friday’s race. Overall, the weather is ideal for racing with temperatures in the mid-70s and no rain in the forecast.

Marvin Musquin (Red Bull KTM) is the top qualifier in the 450MX class. He’s nearly a half-second quicker than Joey Savatgy, who was the quickest in Q1. Savatgy looked good in the second session, nipping the next-best rider Adam Cianciarulo by approximately two-tenths of a second.

Blake Baggett and Chase Sexton, who had a crash in Q2, round out the top five.

Points leader Zach Osborne didn’t set the world on fire, nor did defending champ Eli Tomac. Tomac qualified seventh and Osborne ninth.

Justin Barcia is seventh quickest.

Ty Masterpool gets first gate pick in the 250MX class.

Ty Masterpool, who showed amazing speed Friday is back at it again today. He topped 250MX Q1 but finished second to Dylan Ferrandis in Q2. However, Masterpool’s time in the first qualifier held up as the quickest of the morning by approximately a half-second over Ferrandis, who revealed he’s still sore from his second-moto crash Friday.

Yamahas made up the first four spots: Masterpool, Ferrandis, Justin Cooper and Shane McElrath, all representing the Monster Energy/Star Racing Yamaha team.

The first non-Yamaha rider is Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki rider, Mitchell Harrison.

Points leader Jeremy Martin qualified 10th.
