EUCLID, Ohio — Parents at some Cuyahoga County high schools are petitioning for their districts to overturn decisions last week to comply with board of health recommendations not to conduct fall sports.
First, Mayfield made the decision to change course.
Could Euclid and Shaker Heights be next?
The Euclid petition, which can be found here, has a goal of 500 signatures and quickly passed 200 Monday morning. The Shaker Heights petition, which can be found here, has a goal of 100 signatures.
“While Euclid postponed sports for the first nine weeks of the school year, other schools in Cuyahoga County continue to practice and start their seasons,” the Euclid petition stated. “In order to get Euclid fall sports back, we need to raise awareness from our community and others to show that we should not have our fall athletes sitting idle while other schools in our conference continue to practice. The most frustrating piece of the situation is that the OHSAA stated on July 31st that fall sports will go forward as planned.”
The Ohio High School Athletic Association also suspended scrimmages last week, partly because the Ohio Department of Health is requiring contact sports teams to conduct coronavirus testing on all participants within 72 hours before competition. The OHSAA noted Friday it is targeting Aug. 24 to determine whether Week 1 games can be played, dependent on whether that COVID-19 testing stipulation is lifted.
The OHSAA announced Sunday it is working with the governor’s office and state department of health “regarding our requested modifications for high school sports regarding safety protocols and spectators.”
Non- and low-contact sports, such as golf and tennis, are cleared for competition. The ODH also omitted cross country Saturday from its defined contact sports, which should clear it for competition.
Mayfield football coach Ross Bandiera announced Sunday on his team's Twitter account that the Wildcats would be back on the field Monday. A handful of Cuyahoga County coaches said Friday their districts planned to further address the topic while at least temporarily delaying the start of practice.
Most teams in counties surrounding Cuyahoga County began practices Saturday.
“Our school is following the county board, which I understand,” Euclid coach Jeff Rotsky said that day. “The response from the governor’s office and the OHSAA has had zero continuity. If there’s concern, not everybody is going to do it.”
Many private schools began work in and out of Cuyahoga County, with exceptions of St. Ignatius, Gilmour, Hawken and University School. St. Ignatius is planning to begin practices Tuesday.
