TriMet will allow more people onto its buses and trains starting Sunday.
In a move announced Friday, the system will allow 3-foot spacing between passengers in accordance with Oregon Health Authority directives.
The directives include required face coverings, physical distancing on board and more frequent cleanings of buses and trains. TriMet has hired 130 additional cleaning staff and will begin disinfecting major touch points on buses and trains every four hours, according to a TriMet press release.
TriMet has distributed more than 1.5 million disposable masks to riders and employees and has mask dispensers on buses and trains, the company said. Hand sanitizer dispensers are also on all buses and Type 5 MAX trains. There are plans to install them in the rest of its light rail vehicles, the agency said.
TriMet’s cleaning procedures during the pandemic have already included nightly sanitation of vehicles, using disinfectant fogging machines and daily cleanings of frequently touched surfaces at transit centers.
TriMet is still encouraging 6-foot physical distancing at transit centers, stops and stations. Face coverings are required outdoors, when 6-foot distance cannot be kept.
