People who want to attend these indoor gatherings will need to be tested for COVID-19 or show proof of full vaccination.
California will allow indoor concerts, theater performances, sporting events and conferences to resume starting April 15 in eligible areas.
The state unveiled its latest change to novel coronavirus-fueled restrictions Friday, according to the Associated Press, and stated that these events and performances can take place in areas coded as red, orange and yellow per California's Blueprint for a Safer Economy. The most restrictive tier, purple, would not allow for these changes. Moreover, people who want to attend these indoor gatherings will need to be tested for COVID-19 or show proof of full vaccination.
The number of people allowed to attend indoor events will also depend on the color-coded tier that a region is currently in. In the red tier, a venue that holds up to 1,500 people can invite visitors only at a 10 percent capacity; if the venue can hold more than 1,500 people, then it is allowed to fill at 20 percent capacity. Events and performances in areas in the orange tier — where Los Angeles County is currently situated — or yellow tier can have higher percentages of visitors.
According to California Public Health Officer Dr. Tomás Aragón, initially patrons at these indoor events who are fully vaccinated will need be required to bring a vaccination card with them, but "we anticipate that in the future that the solution will be digital."
Under the new rules, the guest counts for indoor private events including conferences and receptions are limited depending on the tier of the region. In the red tier, indoor gatherings can have up to 100 people if everyone shows proof of testing or vaccination; in the orange tier, that capacity under the same conditions is 150, and in the yellow tier, it's 200.
According to the California Department of Public Health, as of April 2 the state was down to 2,414 tracked cases, with over 18 million people in the state vaccinated. The state has now cumulatively had over 3.5 million cases and over 58,000 deaths since COVID-19 began its spread.
