UPDATE, 11 a.m., July 15.: Tony Gonzales and Raul Reyes are only seven votes apart from each other.
Gonzales, backed by President Donald Trump, now holds a slim lead in Texas CD-23 Republican primary with 2,346 votes. Reyes, who held the lead for most of the night, has 2,339 votes, according to Secretary of State numbers.
Gonzales issued a statement saying he looks forward to winning the seat in November, but the race is still too close to call.
“We will be working to protect the integrity of every legal vote until the canvas is complete over the next week. I am grateful to everyone who helped us in this incredible primary campaign, and I look forward to winning this race in November and always fighting for Texas District 23,” Gonzales said in a statement on Wednesday morning.
Meanwhile, Reyes is holding on hope that he may retake the lead with absentee ballots, which can still be counted today if they are postmarked by election day.
“Furthermore, there may still be provisional and overseas, military ballots to count. This race isn’t over until every legal vote is counted,” Reyes said.
Reyes was endorsed by Texas U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz.
The winner will face Democrat Gina Ortiz Jones in November for the seat to replace Congressman Will Hurd.
Background:
Two Republicans backed by different politicians are battling for the nomination in Texas CD-23 to face off against Democrat Gina Ortiz Jones.
Tony Gonzales, who got 28% of the vote in March, has racked up endorsements from Congressman Will Hurd, the incumbent who is not seeking re-election, and President Donald Trump.
Raul Reyes, who came away with 23% of the vote, was recently endorsed by Texas Senator Ted Cruz.
Both candidates are veterans. Gonzales was a Navy cryptologist who reached the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer, while Reyes retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Reyes has framed himself as the grassroots candidate going up against the establishment. Gonzales, meanwhile, has the backing of multiple national Republican leaders, including Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Minority Whip Steve Scalise.
The winner will have their work cut out for them when they face Jones in November.
Jones, who easily secured the nomination in March with more than 65% of the vote, nearly beat Hurd in 2018.
This is expected to be one of the most competitive congressional districts in the country.
