Kevin Harvick out-dueled Denny Hamlin and Matt Kenseth to take the checkered flag in the NASCAR Cup Series Big Machine Hand Sanitizer 400 for his third career win at The Brickyard in overtime.
The extra time was caused by a late wreck that took the No. 11 car out of the race. Hamlin was leading the field with seven laps to go and looked like he'd have a clear path to the checkered flag, but he blew a right front tire and went into the wall. Hamlin was able to walk away from the fiery crash that cost him a chance to with his fifth race of the Cup Series season.
Kenseth was hot on the leaders' tails over the last 15 laps - he wound up with a second place finish, his best since replacing Kyle Larson in the No. 42 car after the break for COVID-19.
Its the third consecutive race that the No. 4 and No. 11 cars were battling for the lead late in the race. Last weekend in the Pocono doubleheader, Harvick took the Saturday race with Hamlin in second, and on Sunday, Hamlin drove into victory lane with Harvick as the runner up. The win is the fourth of the year for Harvick, tying him with Hamlin for most in the Cup Series this year.
After the race, Harvick told NBA Sports he was just trying to stay close when Hamlin crashed out of the race. "Well, we knew [Hamiln] was going to be really close on tires, and Rodney [Childers] told me on the radio 'just make sure you keep the pressure on him, and that was all the pressure I could give,' Harvick said.
The race also had an incident during the competition caution on lap 16 when multiple cars were involved on a crash on pit road. Zach Price, a rear tire changer on Ryan Blaney's No. 12 team, was caught up in the crash while he was changing a tire. NASCAR announced he suffered leg injuries and was taken to the hospital, but Price was alert and talking as he was taken away from the track. That crash took six cars out of the field, and only 32 cars made it to the finish line.
The first Fourth of July Cup Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway was delayed for about an hour because of lightning in the area, and was the fifth consecutive Cup Series race to be affected by weather. This holiday weekend's race had traditionally been held at Daytona, but with the reshuffled Cup Series schedule this season, the second stop at Daytona was moved to the final race before the playoffs.
The Cup Series moves to Kentucky Speedway for the Quaker State 400 next Sunday.
