NJ Advance Media has launched a daily coronavirus question, a service in which our reporters provide answers to commonly asked questions about the epidemic that has hit hard in New Jersey.
Today’s question is answered by Donald W. Schaffner, a distinguished professor at the Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences in the Department of Food Science.
Q: Is it safe to allow cleaning employees into your home?
A: Yes — if you are well and follow certain guidelines. Certainly there is some risk imposed in hiring a cleaning service, but if you practice appropriate social distancing from those doing the cleaning, it should not be much riskier than going to the grocery store. Beyond staying at least six feet away from each other at all times, what would be even safer is leaving the house during the cleaning. However, if you choose to remain in the house, both you and the cleaning service employees should be wearing face masks. Moreover, the employees should wash their hands or use hand sanitizer upon their arrival and exit, and — if they opt to wear gloves — put on a fresh pair upon entering the home.
