With WrestleMania less than two weeks away, SmackDown's universal title picture continued to dominate the show. Edge began the night by laying out his intentions now that the WrestleMania universal title match has become a triple-threat match.
Daniel Bryan was the only one of the three superstars that found himself wrestling on Friday. Bryan looked to build momentum towards the marquee pay-per-view as he was slated to take on Jey Uso in a street fight. During the match between Bryan and Uso, Edge served as a guest commentator and expressed his opinion even further regarding the triple-threat match.
CBS Sports was with you all night, bringing you recaps and highlights of all the action from the ThunderDome.
Edge defines himself as the "ultimate opportunist" once again
The show opened with Edge coming to the ring to address the triple threat match being made official for WrestleMania. He started by saying that the events from Fastlane and last week's Smackdown could've been avoided. He compared Daniel Bryan to roadkill and accused Bryan of weaseling his way into the universal title match at WrestleMania. Edge was intrigued by the possibility of potentially teaming with Bryan to take on Roman Reigns and Jey Uso at Fastlane. However, Edge said that it wasn't enough for Bryan. Edge didn't see Bryan coming and ran through the scenarios that Bryan laid out for himself to be involved in a universal title match whether it be facing the winner of Reigns and Reigns immediately after or even on the second night of WrestleMania. Following Adam Pearce's decision, Edge said he got outplayed and that he was definitely mad at Bryan.
Edge claimed that he liked what he saw in the mirror following last week's events. He finally saw the Rated-R Superstar looking back at him. Edge didn't think that Pearce, Reigns, or Bryan understood the ramifications of what's happened. Edge also said that he snapped after Pearce made it a triple-threat match and finally woke up. Edge called himself a man that Reigns and Bryan aspire to be and stressed that he's a legend and the ultimate opportunist. Edge finally believes that he's the Rated-R Superstar once again and said he felt good when he hit Bryan and Reigns with repeated chair shots.
In addition, Edge was interviewed backstage about Bryan suffering significant damage at the hands of Jey Uso in a street fight later on during SmackDown. He wasn't feeling for Bryan at all and wouldn't mind if Bryan couldn't compete at WrestleMania.
Daniel Bryan def. Jey Uso via submission. After the match got underway, Roman Reigns came out and sat at the top of the ramp. Uso continued to take it to Bryan throughout the match including using a chair and steel chain to punish Bryan. However, Bryan rebounded to inflict some punishment on Uso as he landed several steel chair shots to the back of Uso. Bryan then rained down shots on Uso with the steel chain and submitted Uso with the Yes Lock. Immediately after the match was over, Bryan hit a running knee on Edge at the commentary desk then bounced Edge's head off of the ring post multiple times. After finishing with Edge, Bryan ran up to the top of the ramp and hit another running knee on Reigns. In addition, Bryan performed another Yes Lock on Reigns on the ramp. SmackDown concluded with Bryan standing tall.
Edge delivered a tremendous promo to start off the night by revealing that he's defining himself as the ultimate opportunist once again. The full heel turn is nearly complete for Edge and the return of the Rated-R Superstar was awesome to see. SmackDown ended with Bryan defeating Uso as expected, but seeing Bryan snap and take out Edge and Reigns added even more excitement to the storyline. WrestleMania can't come soon enough. Grade: A
