2021 Atlanta 3 Supercross Rnd 15 Results: What a night of racing as the Supercross series concluded its residency at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. Both classes provided action-packed main events, with Nate Thrasher (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha) and Cooper Webb (Red Bull KTM) coming out on top in their respective races. With the win, Webb pulled back a few points and now leads Ken Roczen by 16 points in the championship with two to go.

Roczen (Honda HRC) was looking to maintain his newfound momentum for tonight’s race and executed as needed when the gates dropped for the 450SX main event. The number-seven of Aaron Plessinger (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha) nabbed the holeshot and early lead with Roczen, Anderson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna), and Webb hot on his heels.

On the opening lap, Dylan Ferrandis (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha) jumped into the rear end of Anderson and forced the two to the ground. Anderson had an amazing start to the day, logging the fastest qualifying lap and a heat race win, but would go on to finish 11th in the main.

Roczen made his way around the leader, Plessinger, and looked to put a gap on his title rival Webb. The number-94 machine checked out from the field, opening up a 10-second lead by the halfway point of the race.

Meanwhile, the pressure was on for the rest of the podium positions. Justin Barcia (Red Bull/TLD/GasGas) ran fourth with Eli Tomac (Monster Energy Kawasaki) rounding out the top five. This group of four riders seemed evenly spaced, but all looked to improve before the checkers.

With Barcia closing on Webb, the KTM rider looked for an opening around Plessinger. The two raiders locked into a brief battle, but the number-two machine was able to squirt away from the hungry hopefuls.

Tomac found his way around Barcia during the same lap but faced a gap of three seconds to the duo of Webb and Plessinger.

With his lead growing and seven minutes remaining on the clock, Roczen swapped in the whoops and dismounted from his motorcycle. He quickly jumped back on board uninjured, but his lead was cut down by more than half.

Tomac, not wanting to be left behind, passed Plessinger and began to pressure Webb. This forced Cooper to pick up his pace, and with blood in the water from Roczen’s crash, Webb mounted a massive charge towards the front.

The race for the lead was on with two minutes left. Roczen was now within sight of Webb, and it seemed as if Cooper was using that as extra motivation to track down the leader.

The KTM-rider passed for the lead before the first whoop section with only two laps to go. Undeterred, he quickly opened up a lead of just over one second in the final stages of the race.

As heart rates soared, both riders resorted to jumping through the whoops. Mistakes were aplenty, as Webb swapped brutally in a crucial rhythm section. Roczen raced up to the orange rear fender and the two rivals held it wide open to the line. Webb claimed the victory with less than a second separating him and Roczen.

Tomac, Plessinger, and Barcia rounded out the top five in the 450 class.

Malcolm Stewart (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha) had a great ride, finishing sixth on the night.

Chase Sexton began Atlanta three with a heat race win but finished 10th in the main.

“I have to give it up to my team, they gave me a competitive bike tonight,” said Webb. “We went back and figured some things out. Honestly, I made so many mistakes and I really didn’t ride well at all but I dug deep. I saw Kenny out front and he was riding awesome. I was trying to do everything I can and when he made that mistake, I saw blood in the water and I went for it. I just wanted to win.”

Nate Thrasher proved that his previous win was no fluke with another 250SX West win at Atlanta 3.

250SX West

The stage was set for another dramatic 250SX West main. Heat winner Justin Cooper (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha) grabbed the holeshot in typical fashion, while Cameron McAdoo (Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki)  trailed further back in the field.

On the opening lap, McAdoo seemed to run out of room on the track and cut hard right to avoid a Tuff Block. This move caused chaos around him as he went down and took a number of riders with him. Chris Blose (AJE Motorsports) tagged the shoulder/helmet area of McAdoo and was sent into an endo. His crash resulted in the red flag being thrown before the opening lap could be completed.

The field was then re-racked and put into a full restart. Cooper again grabbed a holeshot with teammate Nate Thrasher, Jalek Swoll (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna), and Seth Hammaker (Pro Circuit Kawasaki) just behind. The restart actually benefited McAdoo as he came out unscathed and rounded out the top five.

Heat winner Hunter Lawrence (Honda HRC) was making his way to the front but over-scrubbed the wall jump and collected himself with a Tuff-Block. He hit the deck and would be forced to come from back in the pack.

Cooper made a big mistake in the tight 180-degree turn just after the finish line and would hand the lead over to the number-91 of Thrasher. Thrasher, who transferred in via an LCQ win, took control of the race and looked to get away on a clear track.

Teammates Hammaker and McAdoo were neck and neck through the treacherous whoop section. Hammaker bobbled and slowed his speed, as McAdoo closed in and rear-ended him. Hammaker got away, but this incident put McAdoo on the ground again and caused a bottleneck of other downed riders.

He got back on the bike and displayed more of that never-say-die mentality. While moving through the field, Garret Marchbanks (Club Mx Yamaha) came out of nowhere and cleaned out McAdoo in a blatant fashion. This debacle put both riders on the ground and the two bickered for a few moments, even standing on each other’s bikes before re-entering the race. Needless to say, the two lost a number of positions.

Thrasher continued to hold it down up front, extending his lead to five seconds over Cooper. Hammaker remained in the third spot, with Lawrence eventually closing in on the fourth spot.

The final few laps remained unchanged. Thrasher took home the win, in nearly identical fashion to his win from last Saturday. Cooper and Hammaker rounded out the podium with Lawrence and Peters finishing fourth and respectively

After a horrendous day, McAdoo crossed the line in the 13th position.

Lawrence overtook McAdoo in the championship and is now second to Cooper, trailing the Yamaha rider by 20 points with two rounds still to go.

McAdoo is still right there. He’s third in the championship, two points behind Lawrence.

QUALIFYING

2021 Atlanta 3 Supercross Rnd 15 Results: Qualifying is wrapped up for the Atlanta 3 Supercross, round 15 of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series at Atlanta Motor Speedway. And for the second time in a row, Jason Anderson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) is the top 450SX qualifier.

Anderson’s best time was a 1:35.835, and he again looks like he’s on a mission to get his first Supercross since his championship season in 2018. Anderson is fast and consistent on the Atlanta track.

Next-best is Chase Sexton, followed by last Tuesday’s winner Ken Roczen, Malcolm Stewart and Dean Wilson.

Defending champ Eli Tomac hasn’t shown his best yet. He’s down in sixth, nearly two full seconds behind Anderson.

Points leader Cooper Webb isn’t fairing much better in seventh, followed by Dylan Ferrandis, Justin Barcia and Martin Davalos.

For the first time of his career, Hunter Lawrence (Honda HRC) topped 250SX West qualifying by nearly 2/10ths of a second over points leader Justin Cooper.

All eyes were on last Tuesday’s hero Cameron McAdoo who is riding in pain from last Tuesday’s well-documented crash. McAdoo qualified third before suffering another huge get-off just moments before the clock ran out. The Kawasaki rider was slow to his feet, needed assistance to his bike and then rode back to the pits.

Garrett Marchbanks, Nate Thrasher, Jarrett Frye, Seth Hammaker, Chris Blose, Jalek Swoll and Mitchell Harrison round out the top 10 qualifiers.

Weather conditions are cooler than last Tuesday, and the talk of the track is the exceptionally long whoop section, which many of the riders are struggling to just get through without crashing or losing big-time momentum. CN
