10 observations: Blackhawks blow lead, lose to Panthers originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

The Blackhawks lost to the Florida Panthers 4-2 on Saturday at BB&T Center.

Here are 10 observations from the loss:

1. The Blackhawks have struggled in the first period as of late, but Saturday they finally got back on track after leading in shot attempts (19-11), shots on goal (12-6), scoring chances (9-5) and high-danger chances (5-2), according to Natural Stat Trick.

2. Despite the strong start, the Blackhawks found themselves in a 3-1 hole through 40 minutes of play after the Panthers scored three times in a span of 4:33. The momentum appeared to shift after Radko Gudas laid a big hit on Carl Soderberg in the neutral zone.

3. The Panthers recorded only six shots on goal in the first period. They registered 29 over the next two periods and finished with 35 total. Their season average is 34.0, which ranks No. 1 in the NHL

4. The Blackhawks fell to 1-2-1 when scoring the first goal in the month of March. They were 9-0-1 prior to this stretch.

5. The Blackhawks had a tough night at the dot. They won only five of 17 draws in the first period and finished 24 of 71 for a win percentage of 33.8.

6. The Blackhawks had no answer for Aleksander Barkov. He scored twice, added an assist, registered a team-high five shots on goal and won 19 of 25 faceoffs for a win percentage of 76.0.

7. Brandon Hagel came so close to opening the scoring in the first period but was denied by Sergei Bobrovsky. Well, Hagel eventually did open the scoring but it didn't come until the second period and it was a beautiful goal after he played give-and-go with Dominik Kubalik.

8. The Kubalik-Kampf-Hagel trio was the only line that was going for the Blackhawks. During 5-on-5 play, they were on the ice for nine shot attempts for and one against, five scoring chances for and zero against and two high-danger chances for and zero against.

9. Anthony Duclair returned to the lineup after missing six games with a lower-body injury and he was a real threat for the Panthers. He recorded three primary assists and four shots on goal in 12:28 of ice time.

10. Adam Boqvist scored a late goal but he had a solid game defensively. He prevented the Panthers from scoring the first goal with a terrific diving effort in the opening period and then broke up a 2-on-1 chance early in the second.
