Wyoming Public Schools has suspended activity for its high school football teams through Oct. 18 after the district received notification of positive COVID-19 test results, according to a release issued by the district this afternoon.
The release did not specify the number of positive test results and whether they involved players or coaches in the program on the varsity or sub-varsity teams.
The two-week suspension of football operations will result in the cancellation of all activities, including varsity and junior varsity games against Mona Shores this week and varsity and JV games vs. Reeths-Puffer next week.
Wolves football teams may return to practice on Oct. 19.
Wyoming’s varsity football team is scheduled to finish the regular season Oct. 23 with a game at Holland.
“Making a decision in the best interest of our students and staff was our primary focus,” Wyoming superintendent Craig Hoekstra said in a release. “Given the number of individuals impacted, it became necessary for us to suspend both varsity and junior varsity football, practices and games, for the next two weeks. In making this decision, which is based on multiple factors, we relied on our partnership with the Kent County Health Department.”
The release, as well as a letter sent to football athletes and their families, stated that the welfare of student-athletes is at the center of every decision that Wyoming Public Schools makes regarding its ability to proceed.
Defending Division 2 state champion Mona Shores (3-0), which was ranked No. 1 in the first Associated Press poll of the season released Monday, was seeking a contest for Friday when this story published.
Nearby Grand Haven (0-3) also is searching for a game this Friday, as the Buccaneers' contest with Rockford this Friday was canceled after a confirmed positive COVID-19 test from a member of the Rams' team.
