In the first seven pitches that Lance Lynn threw, he allowed two hits — one an infield single. He was in an instant jam.
In the final 103 pitches, he didn’t allow a single hit. As he walked off the found following the eighth inning, manager Chris Woodward asked how he felt. Lynn responded merely with a declaration that he’d finish the game.
And he certainly looked capable. His velocity was going up. His performance was improving as the game went on.
“I got a whole lot of body and it takes awhile to get it going where it’s supposed to be,” Lynn said. “So it works out.”
And it did work out for Lynn, once he settled in. He threw his first complete game in more than six years, and did so on the road at baseball’s most notorious hitter-friendly ballpark. Texas won 3-2, and got back to .500 by virtue of winning 6-of-7.
He allowed just one earned run, and cruised after some early defensive woes cost him an even cleaner stat line. Lynn now has a 1.11 ERA over five starts, which is forth in baseball. No one above him on that list has started five games.
“He’s got an ability to go to another gear when a lot of guys don’t,” Woodward said, they fade off or get tired at the end. He can reach back and get more and I knew he was capable of that.”
The infield single from Garrett Hampson led off the game for Colorado. Then Trevor Story added a single. A throwing error from Jeff Mathis in the sixth got another Rockies rally started. Then a fielding error by Elvis Andrus brought a run in.
That gave the Rockies a 2-1 lead at the time. Texas got its runs on a Nick Solak homer in the fifth inning. Then Odor tied up the score 2-2 in the seventh on an RBI single. The Rangers got the lead on a double play in the eighth inning.
Offensively, Solak was happy to get his first real home run after the controversy on the four-base error from Sunday. And Woodward sang Odor’s praises after the game for showing an improved approach after a couple days off.
“You see his back elbow was lower,” Woodward said. “There was a lot — it looked better. … It’s Day 1, it’s better. Obviously my message to him will always be, ‘You’ve got to keep doing that every day.’”
But the night belonged to Lynn. He said he wasn’t even feeling 100 percent during the night. It was a tight”right quad, groin, the whole thing” that was ailing him after he had to cover first base.
He battled through it, though. And he added that he typically enjoys pitching at Coors Field, which is a rarity among pitchers. It’s cool and dry he said, which makes for a comfortable atmosphere.
“That’s the way I think about it when I come here,” Lynn said. “If you outlast the other starter, you get a win. I was told that a long time ago in my earlier years in the NL. If you can outlast the other starter, you’ll get wins here.”
Lynn outlasted the other starter. He outlasted his last outing, when he pitched just five innings. He may have gotten the opening day start this year because Mike Minor had the honor last year. But early on this season, he’s creating distance with the competition as the team’s legitimate ace.
“For me, it’s a good first five so far,” Lynn said. “But you’re only as good as your next one, so I’ve got four days here to get myself ready and try to win a ballgame when it’s my turn again. And that’s the only thing I think about.”
