Venom, is far from the spitting image of perfect hygiene among comic book characters, but still gave readers one of the most disgusting moments of all time during a fight with Spider-Man. But it wasn't Peter Parker who got the worst of it.
Venom eventually grew in popularity among fans, which led Marvel to re-invent the villain as an anti-hero, and subsequently publish several mini-series and ongoing comics starring Venom over the years. While the most recent run on Venom reunited Eddie and the symbiote -- positioning the character in a more heroic light to battle the "God of Symbiotes," there is no denying that Venom was a brutal character in the past, and could be downright disgusting as well.
The 2003 Venom series featured a flashback to a fight between Venom and Spider-Man, set when the former was still acting as a supervillain. As Venom taunts Spider-Man with the knowledge that he will kill him someday, and it will come as a complete surprise, The Thing from the Fantastic Four arrives to save Spidey from Venom, with the rest of the Fantastic Four not far behind. The Fantastic Four has a long and friendly history with Spider-Man, with the Invisible Woman even going on a date with the web slinger early on in his career, so it comes as no surprise that they would help their heroic colleague. What did come as a surprise however, despite the odds seemingly against him, was how Venom managed to incapacitate The Thing in one of the most disgusting ways imaginable.
As The Thing grabs Venom in an attempt to restrain him, the latter proclaims "It's Slobberin' Time," a take-off of the Thing's catchphrase "It's Clobberin' Time," and proceeds to use his enlarged tongue to suffocate the Thing. Despite resistance, Venom further shoves his tongue down the former's throat, in what is possibly the most horrific, but surprisingly effective way to incapacitate a superhero. The "kiss of death" doesn't last very long, however, as the Human Torch arrives and severs Venom's tongue, freeing the Thing from suffocation, and further embarrassment. The rest of the Fantastic Four join the battle, and manage to simultaneously rescue Spider-Man and defeat Venom, separating Eddie Brock from his symbiote. Though this defeat would be far from the last confrontation that Venom would have with the Marvel Heroes, it would serve to be one of his most foul.
Venom is no stranger to committing incredibly odd and gross acts against his enemies, even eating a criminal's brain at one point. But while using his tongue did serve a practical purpose, it does beg the question: why doesn't Venom use his symbiote to achieve the same affect Maybe Venom felt like being outright nasty which, despite ultimately losing the fight, he most certainly accomplished. While subsequent versions of the character, such as Mac Gargan, would indulge in eating people, Eddie Brock was traditionally a more "noble" anti-hero, with this encounter being an exception to the character's traditional portrayal. Nevertheless, based on this encounter, Venom the Lethal Protector can count lethal kissing among his more powerful techniques.
