Prince Harry and Meghan Markle gave viewers a glimpse into their lives in the documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey. The two were very candid about their struggles as well. Markle talked about trying to deal with the media scrutiny and the prince talked about the need to protect his family.
But some royal experts were shocked by what the pair revealed, claiming that they are going about things the wrong way and would be better off following Queen Elizabeth II‘s most important rules. Here’s what those rules are and if the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s behavior could be damaging to the monarchy.
Are they breaking Her Majesty’s ‘key rules?’
After the documentary aired, British journalist Charles Moore wrote about a couple of the queen’s key rules that Markle and Harry don’t seem to be following.
The columnist noted that members of the royal family follow a set of rules in order to maintain a “professional relationship with the press.”
“Rule 1: do not seem too needy,” Moore wrote. “The press are bullies and fasten on to this sense that they are being pleaded with.”
He went on to explain that Her Majesty is a master with that rule as is her daughter, Princess Anne.
Moore added that another important rule is “coordinate what you do with other royals. The monarchy, after all, matters far more than the concerns of any member of the royal family.
“We know that dynasties often fight,” Moore said referring to when Prince Harry addressed a rift with his brother, Prince William. “All the more reason for their members to present a united front to the outside world, even when seething inwardly. The Sussexes are in danger of ignoring [these] rules.”
Is their behavior ‘damaging?’
Markle and Harry have every right to feel scrutinized as a ton of stories, many that aren’t even true, are written about them on a daily basis. Things have gotten so bad that the prince recently announced that he is taking legal action with a lawsuit against the British tabloids.
Royal biographer Penny Junor gave her take on why she thinks the duke and duchess’ approach of addressing the criticism and fighting back against the media is a mistake.
“There has been a long tradition in the British royal family of riding criticism out and keeping your head down and taking the long view. Crises come and go, and people get criticized — often for five minutes by the media, who then move on,” Junor told People. “He sees the pain of his wife and the attacks she faces, and he wants to try to sort it out. It is kind of heroic in a way, but also misguided. It would be better to build relationships with the media.”
Moreover, royal expert Russell Myers opined that Markle’s choice to reveal that a lot of people haven’t asked how she’s doing could be “damaging” for other royals.
“I think that is very, very raw. It is very emotional,” he said, before adding, “This is potentially very, very damaging for the royal family. What does she mean by that? Does she mean Prince Charles, Kate, William, Camilla have not asked her how she is? They obviously understand the struggles she is going through as well.”
