CHARLESTON, S.C. (WVLT) - South Carolina lawmakers introduced a bill that would allow hospitals statewide to get help from recent nurse graduates.
According to the bill introduced by Senator Tom Davis, individuals who have graduated from an accredited nurse school would be allowed to practice under the supervision of a licensed registered nurse while waiting to take their licensure exam.
Officials said the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a delay in licensure exams and a demand for more hospital staff.
During the pandemic, some states, including South Carolina issued a temporary order allowing nursing graduates to start helping in hospitals before their exam. The proposed bill would make that permanent.
The legislation states nurse graduates would have 90 days from graduation to take the National Council Licensure Examination. While waiting they would be allowed to start their job training in the hospital.
The bill has passed the Senate and has been referred to a House committee.
