It was a photo finish, but Authentic just didn't have enough in the tank to catch Swiss Skydiver down the stretch of the Preakness Stakes on Saturday.
Authentic (9-5), the Belmont Stakes winner, was the heavy favorite, but Swiss Skydiver (6-1) took the lead midway through the race and was able to hold on as the two horses went neck-and-neck at the tail end of the race. She was the sole female horse in the field, becoming the sixth Filly to win the Preakness.
Bob Baffert, the trainer of Authentic and Thousand Words, will have to wait another year to win his record eighth Preakness, while Kenneth G. McPeek got his first Preakness win as a trainer.
