Will Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex Take Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Place? - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex have officially stepped back from life as working royals. After their shocking Jan. 8 announcement where they revealed their intent to step back and become financially independent, the duo have come to an agreement with the remaining senior members of the British royal family.

“The couple will still be known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, but they will no longer formally represent the Queen or receive money from the Sovereign Grant, the annual funding given to the Queen by the government to cover the costs of the royal family’s official expenses,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

Now, with the Sussexes are off to Canada to enjoy a more peaceful life and Prince Andrew has been ousted for his ties to the late sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein, the royals are now scrambling to figure out the royal workload.

Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex have been a quiet force in the royal family

Though there has been a ton of hoopla surrounding the Sussexes and the Cambridges, Queen Elizabeth II’s youngest son Prince Edward and his wife, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, have been a quiet and scandal-free royal force for years.

“Edward has molded into a quiet and efficient figure who does not seek attention or acquire headlines,” a source told Express“He and Sophie are liked for being dutiful and uncomplaining.”

In fact, the countess is rumored to be one of the queen’s favorite people, she and Prince Edward even got Her Majesty to watch Season 1 of Netflix’s The Crown.

Sophie, Countess of Wessex and Prince Edward have been going on more royal outings lately

Though they are both working royals — very little attention has been paid to the prince and the countess, until now. The pair recently joined Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge at the UK-Africa Investment Summit at Buckingham Palace.

Most royal fans were pretty shocked to see the duo joining the Cambridges. After all, they typically don’t attend such high-profile engagements. However, now that the royal family is thining, someone is going to need to pick up the slack making appearances on behalf of Queen Elizabeth, It is rumored that the queen even wants Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex to become the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.

As the Sussexes step into their new lives, the royals are eager to heal and move forward. “There is anger at the moment,” royal historian Robert Lacey told People. “But if Harry and Meghan are prepared to enter into the spirit of this new arrangement” —making sure not to appear to cash in on their titles and reputations—“I think the Queen, Charles and William will [support them]. Each of them, for different reasons, will want to heal what has gone wrong.”

Sophie, Countess of Wessex and Prince Edward’s daughter Lady Louise could take on Meghan Markle’s royal role

The prince and countess’ 16-year-old daughter, Lady Louise Windsor, may start attending more royal engagements with her parents. She has had a very private childhood until now, following her premature birth. However, we do know that the teen royal loves horses like her grandmother and has even competed in the British Driving Society Championship for Young Drivers.

We just hope Lady Louise gets to choose her own path when the time comes.
