Tuscaloosa’s runoff election is in the books, and Districts 1 and 6 have their new representatives.
In District 1, Tuscaloosa City School Board Member Matthew Wilson narrowly bested Que Chandler for the council seat. Wilson won 465 votes, while Chandler collected 420.
Wilson said he’d been at the Tuscaloosa Department of Transportation, which was District 1’s polling place, near the intersection of 15th Street and Lurleen Wallace Boulevard on 28th Avenue since early this morning.
“Tonight is a humbling experience for me, not only as a constituent of District 1 but offering up myself for the betterment of the entire city,” Wilson said. “Because District 1 collaborates with other council people to make a great city of Tuscaloosa.”
Wilson said he’s proud of everything he’s achieved, because running a campaign takes a lot of time, effort and dedication.
As a lifelong Tuscaloosan, Wilson said he’s always wanted to make a difference, and he’s excited he can do so as a member of the Tuscaloosa City Council.
Chandler said she wanted to thank the voters in District 1 for their support, and said she’ll continue working for and with the district’s residents.
In District 6, incumbent Eddie Pugh lost to former Tuscaloosa Police Capt. John Faile. Faile garnered 688 votes, while Pugh got 582 votes.
“I woke up this morning and I prepared myself to lose, quite frankly,” Faile said. “You have to be prepared to lose and I was at peace with that.”
But his preparation was in vain, because he’ll be sworn in along with all the other city council members on May 17.
“I just thought that if I keep working hard people would reward me with that,” Faile said. “And we did work hard, and people voted for us for that.”
Faile said he campaigned hard, visiting houses in his district and passing out fliers outside local stores. He said several people told him that perseverance gave them the encouragement they needed to go vote.
As Tuscaloosa’s District 6 council member, Faile said he vows to listen to residents and wants them to hold him accountable.
“I want to be available to the people,” he said. “I’m supposed to be a public servant, and that’s just what I’ve been most of my life and I want to continue doing that.”
Pugh told WVUA 23’s Jabaree Prewitt that he’s disappointed he lost the race, but understands the city wants change. He said he’ll continue serving the city of Tuscaloosa after he leaves office.
