If you haven’t seen Kate Middleton shrugging off Prince William’s PDA yesterday, where the heck have you even been? Okay, okay, I know you’re busy, so allow me to recount all the awkward details of Will and Kate’s recent interaction on live (yes, live) television so you can completely understand why it’s raising eyebrows.
Will and Kate made a very festive holiday appearance on A Berry Royal Christmas, which was hosted by The Great British Bake Off’s Mary Berry. Mary is basically a cooking legend! Which is likely why she was able to follow William and Kate around a bunch of royal events and cook a bunch of delicious holiday treats for them.
For the most part, things in the special were looking as holly and jolly as can be...until Kate seemingly did everything in her royal power to dodge Will’s PDA attempt. Will tried placing his hand on Kate’s shoulder, and Kate shrugged him off.
Of course, Kate and Will have strict royal PDA protocol that they’re told to follow in public during their engagements, so the whole thing must have just been a misunderstanding...right? A Twitter user gave Kate and Will the benefit of the doubt and theorized, “I think he tickled her back or shoulder. She did move but there were no dirty looks or even a facial reaction. It was not really long enough of a clip to really tell what was going on, but both seem to be in good humor.”
Sooo...was it really a tickle? According to body-language expert Blanca Cobb, the answer is a big fat NO.
“I don’t think it was a tickle,” Cobb said after studying the moment. “Think about when somebody bumps into you—you’ll pull back and turn your body to have some space. You don’t know it’s coming. So it can be a reflex or it can be that she didn’t want his hand on her at that moment, so she twisted away from him and her shoulder went with the rest of her body.”
Hmm, iiinteresting! Cobb said that while Kate and Will acted like cool cucumbers after the fact, Kate definitely didn’t want Will’s hand on her at the moment. “The way she moved her shoulder, it was obvious she wanted it to come off,” she elaborated.
Still, just because Kate wasn’t feeling the PDA doesn’t immediately spell trouble. Cobb added that this might’ve all just been a reflex, which would mean the internet’s been spiraling over it for naught.
“It could have been that one, she didn’t want his hands on her so she moved her shoulder to get his hand away. Or it could’ve been a surprise,” Cobb said. “Maybe she was in deep conversation with the lady sitting across from her and didn’t realize he was doing it. Sometimes, when someone leans on you or touches you, you will move. It’s a reflex. It truly is a reflex.”
The good news here is that William, for the most part, didn’t appear to react negatively to Kate moving away. “The way William moved his hand, he didn’t seem to be bothered by it, and Kate had a big ol’ smile on her face. I’m not sure whatever it meant to her or for whatever reason why she did it,” Cobb said.
Welp, there you have it—Kate shrugging off William’s PDA was intentional. As to why she did it in the first place? The world may never know!
